Former Vice President Kamala Harris delivered a powerful message at the 2025 NAACP Image Awards, where she received the prestigious chairman’s award. This award honors individuals who demonstrate remarkable public service and effectively utilize their platforms to create significant change. Harris expressed that the accolade is particularly meaningful to her, as she has long been inspired by the mission of the NAACP which influenced her choice to embark on a career in public service.

During her speech, Harris emphasized the importance of maintaining a sense of urgency akin to that of the NAACP’s founders. She acknowledged the feeling of weight from the historical moment, addressing the ongoing challenges facing democracy and the environment. “Some see the flames on our horizons, the rising waters in our cities, the shadows gathering over our democracy,” she said, encouraging action through collective power and advocacy.

Though she did not mention President Donald Trump directly, Harris asserted that the future of America will not be determined solely by those in high office or the affluent but by “we the people.” She received a standing ovation as she concluded her remarks, highlighting the necessity of perseverance in the fight for justice and equity.

During the awards ceremony, Harris was introduced by NAACP board chair Leon W. Russell, who praised her inspiring leadership and tenacity, particularly during her 2024 presidential campaign. He noted that she has set an example for future generations.

The ceremony also saw other notable achievements recognized, including comedian Dave Chappelle receiving the president’s award and Keke Palmer being named entertainer of the year. Additionally, Tyler Perry’s film “The Six Triple Eight,” which chronicles the story of Black women in the Women’s Army Corps during World War II, was a highlight of the night, winning multiple awards, including best picture.

The evening’s focus on celebrating Black excellence and community solidarity encapsulates a shared vision for the future, encouraging attendees to recognize their greatness and the vital importance of collective action in the continued struggle for civil rights and social justice.
