Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow Chooses Samoa, Sparks Pacific Rugby League Ahead of World Cup

Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow is set to join the rising tide of rugby league’s Pacific revolution, confirming his commitment to play for Samoa instead of Australia in the upcoming World Cup. The announcement was met with enthusiasm from approximately 10,000 Samoan fans during a fan day event in Brisbane, where the 24-year-old expressed his excitement about representing his heritage.

Tabuai-Fidow has been in the spotlight throughout 2023 due to a significant eligibility tug-of-war, ultimately sidelining him from the end-of-season Tests due to a knee injury sustained during the final round. Despite this setback, he previously made his Test debut for Samoa during the 2022 World Cup and had been aligned to play for Australia subsequently.

Samoa’s coach, Ben Gardiner, hailed Tabuai-Fidow’s transition back to Samoan colors as a monumental moment for the team. “It’s absolutely huge, and it’s been in the pipeline for quite some time,” Gardiner noted, emphasizing the positive impact such high-caliber talent will have as they prepare for their World Cup campaign in 2026. This exciting transition comes at a time when Samoa will already feature six current State of Origin players in their squad for the Pacific Cup match against Tonga.

In addition to Tabuai-Fidow, Stephen Crichton is anticipated to bolster the Samoan backline, while Taylan May will miss this year’s Pacific Cup due to injury. Tino Fa’asuamaleaui remains undecided about his allegiance as he had opted to tour with the Kangaroos this year.

As the Pacific Cup approaches, Tabuai-Fidow’s potential to wear the No.1 jersey for Samoa increases, particularly if Roger Tuivasa-Sheck transitions to rugby. Gardiner expressed optimism regarding the new dynamics Tabuai-Fidow will introduce to the team, mentioning his speed and ability to change games significantly.

Samoan officials are in discussions with the NRL regarding hooker Jazz Tevaga, who is currently in concussion protocol following a head clash in last week’s match against New Zealand. They believe he might clear the protocols in time to feature against Tonga.

The match will see new players entering the fray as well, with Ativalu Lisati included in the squad due to Jaydn Su’A’s absence due to concussion. Additionally, Tyrone May joins the team after a successful stint in the Super League.

In a contrasting note, Tonga has announced their full-strength squad ahead of the pivotal clash, creating an exciting buildup for the highly anticipated match that underscores the intensifying rivalry in Pacific rugby league. The combination of established and emerging talents highlights the growing competitiveness and spirit of the teams, setting the stage for an exhilarating event.
