Hamas is reportedly poised to release Edan Alexander, an Israeli-American soldier, within the next 48 hours, according to sources involved in negotiations. The information was shared with The Jerusalem Post, and Alexander’s family has confirmed the developments through Channel 12, expressing hope for an official announcement from Hamas soon.
US envoy Steve Witkoff, expected to arrive in Israel on Monday, has been in communication with the family, affirming that the anticipated release is a significant development. The White House’s hostage envoy described this outcome as “a positive step forward” while also urging for the release of four other American hostages taken during the October 7 attacks.
The exiled Hamas leader Khalil al-Hayya noted that the negotiations to facilitate Alexander’s release have involved mediation by Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey. Hamas emphasized that this step is integral to achieving a ceasefire, opening crossings, and allowing humanitarian aid into Gaza.
Hamas reiterated its readiness to engage in intensive negotiations to establish a final agreement for ending the conflict, exchanging prisoners mutually, and establishing governance in Gaza for lasting peace and stability. This announcement follows previous concerns expressed by Hamas regarding the status of Alexander after they reportedly lost contact with the group holding him amid ongoing military actions.
This development brings a sense of cautious optimism amid the ongoing tensions, suggesting that diplomatic efforts may pave the way for further humanitarian considerations and a potential ceasefire in the region. As discussions continue, the hope remains for the safe return of all hostages and for an end to the violence affecting both Israelis and Palestinians.
