The family of a Fishers teenager is urging Indiana lawmakers to take action to protect children from online predators in the wake of Hailey Buzbee’s tragic death. Buzbee, who was just 17 years old, has inspired a petition advocating for “Hailey’s Law,” which seeks to implement educational initiatives in schools regarding online dangers and establish a new alert system for missing children.
Indiana Governor Mike Braun has expressed his support for the petition, emphasizing that the state legislature needs to address these vital issues. During a recent meeting with Hailey’s family, he remarked, “We’re all grieving with you, and our thoughts and prayers are with you,” acknowledging the family’s loss and the urgent need for protective measures.
According to the petition, which has garnered significant public attention, current alert systems in Indiana failed to respond effectively in Hailey’s situation. Police did not issue an Amber Alert because there was no proof of abduction, and a Silver Alert was also not applicable due to the absence of a disability or medical condition. As a response, the petition proposes the introduction of a “Pink Alert” system that would alert authorities and the public in cases where credible risk factors for missing persons and children exist.
Governor Braun is collaborating with the Indiana State Police to explore solutions to these gaps in the alert system. He has also criticized major tech companies for not taking enough responsibility in safeguarding users on their platforms, calling for action that holds them accountable for online safety.
Discussions in the Indiana Senate have included potential bills aimed at limiting social media access for minors, although key restrictions were removed before the bill’s passage. Nevertheless, Braun remains hopeful and supportive of the initiatives proposed by Hailey’s family, stating the need for timely legislative action while the session is ongoing.
House Speaker Todd Huston, who represents Hailey’s district, is actively involved in discussions on enhancing the current alert systems. He recognizes the work done by local law enforcement and emphasizes the importance of ensuring that notifications are executed properly in future cases.
As efforts continue, State Senator Kyle Walker is collaborating with his peers in the House to identify actionable steps that can be taken this legislative session to protect Indiana’s youth from online threats.
