MANHATTAN, Kan. — The Kansas State Wildcats delivered an impressive performance on Saturday, defeating South Dakota 106-76 with a standout showing from junior guard P.J. Haggerty, who scored 24 points in just 26 minutes of play. Haggerty, a transfer from Memphis, has emerged as a remarkable talent in the team, currently ranking as the No. 2 scorer in the nation and exceeding preseason expectations.
Haggerty showcased his versatility by scoring from all three levels and contributing six rebounds and three assists, demonstrating his ability to influence the game in various ways. “He’s not just a point [guard],” said Wildcats coach Jerome Tang. “We can play him off the ball just like you can with David Castillo.” The coach expressed excitement about the multiple scoring options on the team, hinting at their potential as they head into Big 12 play, including a challenging matchup against No. 10 BYU.
This latest performance marks the eighth game of the season where Haggerty has scored 20 or more points, solidifying his place as a preseason All-American candidate. Following his efficient shooting night, where he went 10-of-12 from the field, Tang made it clear he wouldn’t trade Haggerty for any other guard in the country.
“Beauty is in the eye of the beholder,” Tang noted. “All I know is that I wouldn’t want anybody else.” He looks forward to watching Haggerty’s continued improvement as he takes on the responsibilities of managing the game as a point guard.
Despite facing some challenges earlier this season, including a recent four-game losing streak, Haggerty’s growth in reading defenses and his budding partnership with backcourt mate Castillo could be key to the Wildcats’ success moving forward. Haggerty’s energetic playing style not only elevates his own performance but also inspires his teammates, as evidenced by the five other Wildcats who scored in double figures during the game.
As a team, Kansas State shot over 60 percent from the field and 50 percent from three-point range, reflecting the impact of Haggerty’s offensive presence. He has scored in double figures in each of his first 12 games since his arrival in Manhattan, amassing a total of 274 points—just shy of the record set by freshman phenom Michael Beasley during the 2007-08 season.
Tang emphasizes the significant value Haggerty brings to the squad, pointing out his leadership qualities and dedication to improvement. “His care factor is high; he cares about his teammates, winning, and becoming a better player,” said Tang. “It’s been impressive to see how invested he is.”
The Wildcats are poised for what lies ahead, with Haggerty leading the way as they transition into the demanding Big 12 Conference, bringing hope and excitement for their upcoming challenges.
