Beatriz Haddad Maia defeated Caroline Wozniacki 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 to become the first Brazilian in 56 years to reach the US Open quarterfinals, a milestone last achieved by the legendary Maria Bueno.
In New York, Haddad Maia was buoyed by her passionate Brazilian supporters, who cheered her on with a spirited soccer chant. The match was a showcase of her resilience as she stifled Wozniacki’s attempts at a comeback, solidifying her position as the first South American left-handed woman to reach the last eight at the US Open in the Open Era.
Reflecting on her achievement, Haddad Maia expressed her pride in representing Brazil and South America, stating, “It’s very special to hear that…I just try to work hard every single day. It’s a privilege for me to be here.” She became emotional while acknowledging the support she received from fans, emphasizing the significance of representing women’s sports.
Wozniacki, a two-time US Open finalist, fought valiantly throughout the match. The Danish player, in her 15th appearance at Flushing Meadows, managed to convert only three of her 14 break-point opportunities while Haddad Maia capitalized on five of eight.
Post-match, Wozniacki discussed her future, noting the importance of health and fitness in her ability to compete at a high level. She recognized her capacity to challenge top players but acknowledged the difficulty of winning consecutive matches needed for a Grand Slam title.
Haddad Maia started aggressively, breaking Wozniacki three times in the first set to take a commanding 5-1 lead. However, Wozniacki bounced back in the second set, displaying increased confidence and capitalizing on Haddad Maia’s errors to force a deciding set.
The Brazilian regained her focus after a brief break, quickly establishing a 3-0 lead in the final set. She showcased her game with powerful serves and strategic play. Although Wozniacki put up a fight, ultimately, Haddad Maia sealed her victory, advancing to the quarterfinals.
She is set to face 2023 US Open semifinalist Karolina Muchova, who has yet to drop a set in the tournament. Muchova holds a 3-0 record against Haddad Maia in their previous encounters, including a tough three-set match last summer in Cincinnati.
