Gusto’s Rising Role: Can He Save the Astros’ Pitching Dilemma?

Gusto has recently concluded his latest three outings for the Houston Astros as a reliever, totaling 6.1 innings pitched with two earned runs, six hits, two walks, and five strikeouts.

Initially, Gusto played a significant role in the Astros’ rotation throughout the season, having made 12 starts since late May. However, the team decided to transition him to the bullpen shortly before the All-Star break. During Houston’s final series before the break, he stepped up as a long reliever on July 11 after a short outing from Lance McCullers. In the most recent series in Seattle, he made two one-inning appearances, showcasing his versatility.

With McCullers now on the injured list due to a blister on his right hand, Gusto could once again find himself integral to the team’s success, potentially filling in a gap in the rotation. The Astros currently plan to utilize Hunter Brown and Colton Gordon as starting pitchers for their upcoming series against the Athletics, but Gusto may be called upon to either start or contribute in bulk relief roles in the coming days.

This development highlights Gusto’s adaptability and importance to the team’s pitching depth, especially as they navigate injuries in the rotation. Houston fans can remain optimistic as Gusto has shown he can perform effectively in various roles, providing vital support as they push through the season.
