In an interview with Rolling Stone, Gunn suggested that the extensive content strategy employed by Marvel on Disney+ had detrimental effects, stating it “killed them.” However, he later clarified his comments on social media platform @Threads, explaining that he did not mean to imply that Marvel was finished but rather that they faced significant hurdles beyond their control.

Gunn emphasized that the push for abundant streaming content compromised quality, resulting in a saturation of media that could not meet the demand. He expressed relief that the intense competition has begun to balance out, benefiting the industry as a whole. His remarks seem to reflect a broader industry perspective, contrasting with the aggressive content launching strategy that former Disney CEO Bob Chapek had pursued, which aimed to position Disney+ as a formidable rival to Netflix.

Current Disney CEO Bob Iger has since shifted focus, emphasizing fiscal responsibility and reducing the quantity of original content for Disney+. The effectiveness of this change is now a crucial question for Marvel Studios, particularly as films like the newly released Thunderbolts have found themselves in a tough financial position despite favorable audience reviews.
