Gundy’s Future in Jeopardy: Can Oklahoma State Turn the Tide?

Oklahoma State University and head coach Mike Gundy find themselves in a challenging position as contract negotiations take a tense turn, according to a recent report. Gundy has indicated that he has been approached by the university regarding a potential pay cut, which comes on the heels of a disappointing 3-9 season. The university is reportedly considering terminating Gundy for cause if an agreement on a restructured contract is not reached by a set deadline of 5 p.m. CT this Friday.

The discussions follow a special meeting held by Oklahoma State University’s Board of Regents focused on the football program and its coaching staff. Gundy, who has been at the helm for 20 years, signed a rolling five-year contract extension in October 2021, making the current situation all the more perplexing given the depth of his tenure.

The team’s performance this past season was particularly concerning, concluding with an 0-9 record in the Big 12, marking the first time Gundy has not secured a victory in league play. Furthermore, this season was notable as he recorded fewer than four wins for the first time in his career.

In response to the team’s struggles, significant changes have already occurred within the coaching staff, including the dismissal of offensive coordinator Kasey Dunn and defensive coordinator Bryan Nardo shortly after a substantial loss to Colorado.

Gundy’s long-running tenure, which has seen him tied with Utah’s Kyle Whittingham as one of the longest-serving coaches in college football, now faces a critical turning point.

While these developments may seem bleak for Gundy and the Oklahoma State football program, there is potential for renewal and growth. A change in leadership or strategy could pave the way for future success, and Gundy’s experience could emerge as a valuable asset in navigating these challenges. Nonetheless, the next steps will be crucial in determining the program’s path forward.
