Manchester City is leading the way to re-sign Ilkay Gundogan. The 33-year-old former Germany international is focusing on returning to the Premier League champions ahead of other offers.
Barcelona is likely to facilitate Gundogan’s exit, as he is expected to leave the club for free. While the terms of a contract between Gundogan and City are yet to be finalized, discussions have already taken place between Gundogan and manager Pep Guardiola, who has given his approval for the move.
Gundogan’s contract at Camp Nou runs until 2026, having extended his deal for another year last season after meeting the appearance criteria. If everything goes smoothly, he is poised to make a comeback to the Etihad Stadium, where he celebrated five Premier League titles, two FA Cups, and a Champions League trophy during his seven years with the club.
Reports indicate that City is interested in acquiring the midfielder, who is considering his options following advice that he does not feature in the plans of new Barcelona coach Hansi Flick. Gundogan joined City from Borussia Dortmund in 2017 and marked his time there with 188 appearances, playing a crucial role in the club’s dominant era in English football under Guardiola.
He moved to Barcelona last summer on a free transfer, contributing five goals and nine assists over 36 appearances in the 2023-24 season. Due to financial constraints, Barcelona has had to part ways with several players in recent years, including Ousmane Dembele, Antoine Griezmann, and the iconic Lionel Messi.
Gundogan’s departure would allow Dani Olmo, who was signed from RB Leipzig for €60million, to be eligible for Barcelona’s next match against Athletic Club on Saturday. Meanwhile, Manchester City will host newly-promoted Ipswich Town on the same day.
