In Washington, D.C., Rep. Mike Thompson (D-CA) and Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-SC) announced on Tuesday a significant step towards gun violence prevention by unveiling legislation aimed at closing the Charleston loophole and establishing universal background checks for firearm purchases. This initiative has garnered overwhelming support from over 90 percent of Americans, including both gun owners and non-gun owners.
Rep. Thompson emphasized the need for responsible gun ownership and the importance of keeping firearms out of the hands of those who may pose a danger. “Background checks are quick and effective tools to keep our communities safe while still respecting the rights of law-abiding citizens,” he stated. The Charleston loophole, which permits the sale of firearms if a background check is unresolved after three business days, was highlighted as a critical flaw in current laws, particularly referencing the tragic shooting at the Mother Emanuel AME Church in 2015, where lives were lost due to this loophole.
Rep. Clyburn introduced the Enhanced Background Checks Act, which aims to eliminate the three-day waiting period, thus promoting a thorough background check process. Both Thompson and Clyburn’s bills are designed to reduce loopholes, ensuring that dangerous individuals cannot obtain firearms.
The call for action was echoed by Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, who insisted that a bipartisan effort is necessary to enhance public safety. He highlighted the urgency of passing this legislation to address the ongoing gun violence epidemic in the U.S.
Among the supportive voices, organizations such as GIFFORDS, Brady, and Everytown for Gun Safety have voiced their endorsements, stating that background checks are vital to preventing firearms from reaching dangerous individuals. The Brady Background Check system, in place since 1994, has been instrumental in preventing over five million unlawful gun purchases.
Recent events have underscored the necessity for such legislative measures. For instance, an attacker who committed violence in Boulder, Colorado, was reported to have previously failed a background check, preventing a potential mass shooting.
