A 27-year-old man armed with a rifle and wearing tactical gear was shot and killed on Monday morning following a gun battle with law enforcement at a Border Patrol facility in McAllen, Texas. The suspect, identified as Ryan Luis, opened fire at the entrance of the Border Patrol sector annex, resulting in injuries to three individuals, including two officers and a Border Patrol employee. All three were transported to the hospital for treatment.

According to a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson, officers from both the Border Patrol and local police were involved in neutralizing the threat. Police Chief Victor Rodriguez confirmed that during the encounter, one McAllen police officer sustained a knee injury but is expected to recover. The gunfight saw the suspect fire off dozens of rounds before federal agents fatally shot him.

Rodriguez revealed that Luis’s vehicle, linked to a Michigan address, was found containing another rifle along with additional weapons, leading authorities to believe there was a level of premeditation in his actions. The suspect was also reported missing earlier that day from Weslaco, Texas. Details from his vehicle, including the phrase “Cordis Die,” which has ties to the “Call of Duty” video game series, raise questions about his motivations.

As the FBI takes charge of the investigation, officials do not believe there are any ongoing threats to the immediate area. The incident highlights ongoing concerns about gun violence and the safety of law enforcement in border regions.

While this tragic event underscores the seriousness of gun violence, it also reflects the rapid response and cooperation between local and federal law enforcement to ensure public safety.
