The Secretariat of the Navy (Semar) has announced that there are no expected variations in sea levels following the 5.0 magnitude earthquake that struck San Marcos, Guerrero. This seismic event was closely monitored by the Tsunami Alert Center (CAT-SEMAR), which is responsible for observing such occurrences.

According to official reports, the earthquake does not pose a risk to Mexico’s coastlines; therefore, no tsunami alerts or special evacuation protocols were initiated. The maritime authority emphasized that constant monitoring of the area will continue.

The CAT-SEMAR provided clarity regarding the seismic analysis, noting that no changes in sea level are anticipated as a result of the tremor in Guerrero. These assessments are conducted promptly following any seismic activity, particularly when it occurs near coastal regions.

Semar highlighted that not every earthquake results in a tsunami, as specific characteristics such as greater magnitude and significant underwater displacements are necessary for that risk to arise. In this instance, the 5.0 magnitude quake did not meet those requirements.

At this time, no additional advisories or extraordinary recommendations have been issued for coastal populations. Authorities have reiterated that official channels are the reliable source for updates regarding seismic activity and marine behavior.

Moving forward, Semar, through the Tsunami Alert Center, will maintain ongoing surveillance of national coastlines to detect any changes that might pose a risk, although the current situation remains unaffected.

The proactive response and continuous monitoring by Semar offer reassurance to coastal communities, underscoring the importance of preparedness and the effectiveness of the existing early warning systems.
