Gucci Mane Opens Up About Mental Health in New Memoir

Atlanta rapper Gucci Mane, whose real name is Radric Davis, has opened up about living with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia in his new memoir, “Episodes: The Diary of a Recovering Mad Man,” released on October 14. In a recent appearance on “The Breakfast Club” alongside his wife, Keyshia Ka’oir, Gucci shared his experiences with these mental health challenges.

During the interview, Gucci described his episodes as akin to being in a “psychosis” or a “warped world,” where he would hear voices and feel as though others were against him. His wife, Keyshia, revealed that these moments can be frightening for her, often feeling as if she is witnessing someone she doesn’t recognize.

Gucci recounted how his mental health struggles led to significant personal losses, including giving away expensive jewelry. He expressed disappointment that friends took advantage of his vulnerable state during those times. “I gave my friends jewelry. And they knew I wasn’t well; they’d take it,” he said.

The turning point for Gucci came in 2020 when he realized the importance of improving his mental health, especially with his wife expecting their first child together, Ice. “I don’t want to raise a family, and then my mental health gone,” he stated, highlighting the urgency he felt to seek help.

Keyshia disclosed her proactive role in managing Gucci’s mental health. She explained her strategy of removing social media apps from his phone during troubling times to protect him from public scrutiny and potential triggers. “I control everything at home,” she noted, emphasizing her commitment to catching episodes before they escalate.

Gucci confirmed that he has been undergoing therapy and taking medication to manage his conditions. He underscored the critical role of self-motivation in recovery, asserting, “You got to do the work yourself, if you want to really get better.” He encouraged others struggling with similar issues to take charge of their recovery, stressing that while support from loved ones is valuable, the desire to heal must come from within.

This candid discussion not only sheds light on Gucci Mane’s personal struggles but also serves as an empowering reminder for those facing mental health issues to prioritize their well-being and seek help.
