Guardians Gear Up for Crucial Cubs Series Amid Struggles

The Cleveland Guardians are eager to end their four-game losing streak as they prepare for a three-game road series against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field, starting on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, at 8:05 p.m. ET. This matchup comes as the Guardians aim to rebound after a challenging June in which they posted a dismal .206 batting average, tying for the third-worst in franchise history for the month.

Guardians manager Stephen Vogt expressed the need for the team to regain their composure at the plate, emphasizing that the players are putting too much pressure on themselves to perform flawlessly. “We need to relax. We need to just take a deep breath, take a step back and go play baseball,” he stated. The team currently sits at 40-42, 2.5 games away from a wild-card spot after a promising start to the season.

In June, the Guardians struggled particularly with scoring runs, managing only 72, which is the third-lowest for the franchise in that month. Despite these offensive issues, the pitching staff has maintained a competitive edge with a 3.79 ERA, ranking eighth in the majors. Notably, outfielder José Ramírez is standing out with a .309 batting average.

As the Guardians consider their options for improvement ahead of the July 31 MLB trade deadline, there could be reinforcements on the way from the minors. Outfielder Chase DeLauter has been impressive in Triple-A Columbus, boasting a .305 batting average and a 26-game on-base streak, while first baseman/outfielder C.J. Kayfus has shown power with 10 home runs and a .303 average.

Looking to the future, team president Chris Antonetti remains optimistic about the potential for improvement and the young talent waiting in the wings. “I think as we look forward, the results will be better from here than they’ve been over the last month,” he noted.

Following the series against the Cubs, the Guardians will face the AL Central leading Detroit Tigers before embarking on a challenging seven-game road trip. Despite the hurdles ahead, Vogt remains hopeful about the resilience of his team: “This is a really talented team. I believe in each and every one of these guys, and I know we’re going to break out of it.”

As the Guardians navigate this tough stretch, the upcoming series against the Cubs presents an opportunity for rejuvenation and revitalization in their quest for a playoff position.
