Francisco Comesaña faced a challenging defeat in the quarterfinals of the ATP 250 tournament in Gstaad, Switzerland, on Friday. The seventh seed was eliminated by Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik, who won decisively with a score of 6-4, 6-3, in just 71 minutes.
Throughout the match, both players showcased strong service games. However, Bublik capitalized on two of the four break points he had, which proved crucial in securing his victory. He served 11 aces compared to Comesaña’s 8 and made 28 winners against 22 unforced errors. Conversely, Comesaña recorded 18 winners and 13 errors. As a result of this performance, Bublik, ranked 34th in the world and second-seeded in the tournament, will move on to face the winner of the match between Swiss wildcard Jerome Kym and French player Arthur Cazaux.
Despite the defeat, Comesaña’s run in Gstaad will see him rise in the ATP rankings from 74th to 72nd place. Among the three Argentine players who reached the quarterfinals, only Juan Manuel Cerúndolo advanced to the semifinals. He pulled off a notable upset against top seed and two-time Gstaad champion Casper Ruud, winning 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 in two hours and nine minutes. Cerúndolo will face 21-year-old Ignacio Buse from the qualifying rounds, who also had a hard-fought victory over Román Burruchaga.
Meanwhile, at the ATP 250 tournament in Bastad, Sweden, Camilo Ugo Carabelli progressed to the semifinals after defeating Austrian Filip Misolic, while Sebastián Báez was eliminated by Italian Luciano Darderi.
The Gstaad tournament has a rich history dating back to 1968 and has seen five Argentine champions, showcasing the country’s strong tradition in tennis. As of now, the hope remains for the Argentine players to continue competing strongly in the semifinals and potentially contribute to the impressive legacy of their predecessors.
