Celebrated annually on February 2, Groundhog Day 2026 falls on a Monday. The longstanding tradition revolves around Punxsutawney Phil, the famous groundhog from Pennsylvania. On this day, Phil’s shadow will determine whether we can expect six more weeks of winter or an early spring. If the day is sunny and Phil sees his shadow, legend states that winter will linger longer. Conversely, if it’s cloudy and he does not see his shadow, it’s believed that spring will arrive sooner.

Last year, Phil predicted a longer winter, aligning with the folklore that has drawn crowds to Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney for over 139 years. The event typically features Phil’s “Inner Circle,” a group of top-hatted men who manage the ceremony. Interestingly, throughout his history, Phil has seen his shadow 109 times. Despite this, his predictions have not been particularly reliable; a study by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration indicated that his forecasts have been accurate only around 35% of the time.

Tracing back to Phil’s first official shadow sighting in 1887, the tradition has seen its fair share of significant moments. From the first newspaper coverage in 1908, when Phil saw his shadow, to the only year he was absent in 1943 during World War II, the event has been a captivating spectacle. His longest streak of shadow sightings spanned 21 years from 1913 to 1933, while he famously did not see his shadow in 2019 and 2020.

Though the accuracy of Phil’s predictions may leave something to be desired, the festivities surrounding Groundhog Day bring communities together, adding a dash of fun during the winter months. As we await Phil’s official prediction, there’s a shared anticipation that the groundhog may just provide some optimistic news to lift spirits as winter winds down.
