A new school dedicated to supporting underprivileged children is underway in Nadawa, Nasinu, thanks to the efforts of the Inner City Mission for Children. Set on over two acres of land, the much-anticipated project is finally breaking ground following three years of challenging land negotiations, with an estimated budget of $2 million. Funding will come from a global network of partners and church member contributions.
Project Director Navi Tuivuniwai explained that the school will focus on children from 57 settlements within the Nasinu municipality who face significant financial barriers to education. Although governmental support exists, some families continue to struggle with the costs associated with schooling, making this initiative crucial for bridging educational disparities.
The school will offer a full suite of services at no cost to the families, including tuition, uniforms, meals, and transportation. Furthermore, it aims to incorporate faith-based values to provide holistic support, enhancing both the spiritual and social well-being of families.
The construction is projected to be completed within a year, paving the way for an official opening ceremony next September. This development is part of a larger regional movement emphasizing the enhancement and expansion of educational opportunities, backed by both local and international efforts. Other similar projects, like those by the Tappoo Group involving kindergarten and technology improvements in Nasinu, further illustrate a growing commitment to fostering educational advancement in Fiji’s underserved communities. These projects highlight a promising shift towards improving educational access and quality for vulnerable populations, suggesting a brighter future for many children in the region.
