Weeks before Elon Musk stepped down from his role in the government, a waiver was sent to the human data team at his artificial intelligence startup, xAI, mandating employees to work with explicit content, including sexual material. The waiver indicated that the job could expose them to “sensitive, violent, sexual and/or other offensive or disturbing content,” which many employees found alarming. This change raised concerns among some team members about xAI’s direction, originally established to “accelerate human scientific discovery,” as it now seemed to shift focus towards generating content that could increase user engagement.

The concerns expressed by employees were validated when, in the following months, team members encountered an influx of sexually explicit audio, including conversations between Tesla occupants and the car’s chatbot as well as sexual interactions involving Grok, xAI’s chatbot. Since Musk’s departure from the U.S. Department of the Interior Services in May, his hands-on involvement with xAI intensified, including overnight stays at the office and a drive to boost Grok’s engagement through a new metric called “user active seconds.”

The culture at xAI also evolved to encourage the generation of sexualized content. The company released sexually explicit AI companions, relaxed guardrails surrounding mature content, and disregarded warnings regarding the potential legal and ethical ramifications of such actions. Safety teams at X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, alerted management about the dangers associated with its AI tools, including the potential creation of illegal content like child sexual abuse images, but these warnings were often overlooked.

Notably, when xAI combined its image editing tools with X, it facilitated the rapid spread of explicit content. The changes culminated in the release of sexualized images by Grok that drew significant public attention, leading to investigations by legal authorities in California, the UK, and the European Commission over potential violations relating to non-consensual intimate imagery and child sexual abuse material.

In response to the growing backlash, Musk claimed he was unaware of any underage nude images generated by Grok, asserting that the chatbot would refuse to produce illegal content. Despite this, the app still allowed users to create images of mature content. Musk’s assertive strategy appears to have resulted in Grok climbing into the top ranks of popular apps, with a 72% increase in daily downloads noted early this year.

However, Musk’s approach to using sexually suggestive designs and prompts for user engagement has faced criticism. Influencer Ashley St. Clair, who was a subject of Grok-generated images, stated that Musk could halt such abuses but has chosen not to. Furthermore, while xAI announced measures to restrict certain types of sexually suggestive content, it appears that ample loopholes remain within their system.

Musk’s ongoing battle to elevate xAI and Grok reflects a broader debate in the tech industry about the ethical use of artificial intelligence. Critics highlight that encouragement to use emotional and sexualized language to retain users could undermine their well-being and compromise safety, particularly as Grok’s features have made it easier to generate sexually explicit material without users’ consent.

With the ramp-up in scrutiny, xAI is now attempting to bolster its AI safety team, aiming to recruit more professionals dedicated to ensuring the responsible use of their technology. This shift signifies a move towards addressing the legal and ethical complexities that have arisen amid the rapid growth and evolution of their AI tools.
