Former Alabama and NFL quarterback A.J. McCarron has officially announced his candidacy for lieutenant governor of Alabama in the upcoming 2026 elections. The Mobile native made his announcement on Thursday, expressing his desire to represent the Republican Party in what he described as a crucial battle for Alabama’s conservative and cultural values.
“In a time when Alabama’s values are under siege from all sides, I felt compelled to take action,” McCarron stated. He attributed his motivation to enter politics in part to the impact of Charlie Kirk’s experience, which he noted resonated deeply with many conservatives. “Today, I’m announcing my candidacy for Lieutenant Governor of Alabama to stand firm for our beliefs,” he added.
McCarron is widely recognized for his successful college career as the starting quarterback for the University of Alabama, leading the team to consecutive national championships in 2012 and 2013. After declaring for the NFL Draft in 2014, he enjoyed a nine-season career in professional football. In 2016, he endorsed Donald Trump for president and has credited both Trump and the current 47th president for inspiring his political aspirations.
Currently working as a college football analyst, McCarron co-owns McCarron Real Estate with his wife, Katherine Webb McCarron, who was crowned Miss Alabama USA in 2012. The couple resides in Mobile and has three sons.
McCarron further emphasized the need for fresh voices in politics, stating, “The Montgomery insiders and career politicians have had their chance. It’s time for political newcomers and outsider candidates like me to lead the battle.” He expressed his commitment to collaborating with Governor Tuberville to advance a conservative agenda.
In the Republican primary, he will compete against Alabama Commissioner of Agriculture and Industries Rick Pate, Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen, and Dr. Nicole Wadsworth. The primary election is set for May 19, 2026.
As Alabama gears up for this political contest, McCarron’s entry into the race marks an intriguing development, bringing attention to the dynamics within the Republican Party as they prepare for the upcoming elections.
