A woman named Zoe Maharaj from Suva has pleaded not guilty to multiple drug-related charges during her appearance at the Suva Magistrates Court. The court heard that she faces four significant charges: unlawful possession of illicit drugs, possession of property believed to be proceeds of crime, possession of breaking implements, and unlawful possession of explosives.
The allegations stem from a police search that uncovered substances in the vehicle Maharaj was in, which tested positive for methamphetamine. In a troubling addition to the case, authorities also found a grenade among her possessions. The prosecution has indicated that they are currently awaiting the analysis of the grenade from a military explosives expert before proceeding further with the case.
During the proceedings, the prosecution requested more time to obtain this expert report. Maharaj’s lawyer, Isimeli Keteca, expressed concerns regarding the potential infringement of Maharaj’s constitutional rights due to the charges, particularly emphasizing the need for further substantiation regarding the explosive device.
Magistrate Joseph Daurewa opted to exercise caution in the matter, stating he would deliberate on a bail decision only after all relevant information has been provided. The case is set for a bail hearing on the 9th of next month, allowing time for the legal proceedings to unfold appropriately.
This case underscores the ongoing issues related to drug offenses and the possession of explosives, presenting significant legal challenges. The justice system is tasked with ensuring a balanced approach in navigating these serious allegations while upholding the rights of the accused. As the process continues, there is hope that the court will seek a fair and just resolution.
