The 2020 disaster film “Greenland” has paved the way for a highly anticipated sequel titled “Greenland 2: Migration,” which is set to hit theaters on January 9, 2026. Originally, the project was intended to be directed by Neill Blomkamp with Chris Evans in the lead role, but it ultimately transitioned into the capable hands of Ric Roman Waugh, who directed the first film and has collaborated with star Gerard Butler on other projects like “Angel Has Fallen” and “Kandahar.”

With Waugh at the helm and a screenplay penned by Mitchell LaFortune alongside the original writer Chris Sparling, “Greenland 2: Migration” follows the perilous journey of the Garrity family after a comet strikes Earth, necessitating their exit from the safety of their Greenland bunker. Gerard Butler and Morena Baccarin reprise their roles as John and Allison Garrity, while Roman Griffin Davis assumes the role of Nathan Garrity from Roger Dale Floyd. The cast also features Amber Rose Revah, Sophie Thompson, Trond Fausa Aurvåg, and William Abadie, enhancing the ensemble.

The sequel garnered significant attention during its development, culminating in a landmark deal at the Cannes virtual market, where STX Films acquired worldwide distribution rights for a staggering $75 million—$25 million for domestic rights and an additional $50 million for international rights through a partnership with Anton. Given the positive reception of the original film, which earned an 8/10 review from noted critic Chris Bumbray, it’s no surprise that streaming platforms vied for this exciting sequel, but STX secured the rights thanks to their pre-existing relationship with the franchise.

Fans of the original “Greenland” are eagerly awaiting this next chapter in the story of survival, and exclusive images from “Greenland 2: Migration” are set to further whet appetites leading up to its release. The success of the original film and the impressive behind-the-scenes team lend an optimistic outlook for the sequel, promising another thrilling cinematic experience for audiences worldwide.
