Phil Neville, the manager of the Portland Timbers, recently expressed his observations on the city’s progress as he prepares for the upcoming MLS season. Reflecting on a Valentine’s Day outing with his wife, he noted significant improvements in Portland since his arrival in November 2023, despite acknowledging that challenges remain. “I can see from where it was three years ago how the city is in a miles better place now,” Neville remarked. He hopes both the city and his team will continue on a positive trajectory.

The Timbers are set to kick off their regular season at Providence Park on Saturday against Columbus, with Neville entering the third and final year of his contract. Over the past two seasons, the team has been somewhat inconsistent, achieving a wild card round in 2024 and reaching the first round of playoffs in 2025 while posting a record of 29-28-24.

Neville emphasized the need for tangible results, stating, “There becomes a time when you’ve got to deliver.” He believes that success is ultimately defined by winning, a standard he holds himself and his staff accountable to.

This season, the team appears better positioned for success compared to last year. Gone are the turbulent dynamics of the previous offseason, replaced by a calmer atmosphere. Key player Kristoffer Velde is healthy and has stepped into a leadership role, though the team did part ways with midfielder David Ayala, transferring him to Inter Miami. However, this transition offered the opportunity to sign promising midfielder Cole Bassett from Colorado.

Neville was quick to commend Bassett, highlighting his potential impact. At just 24, Bassett boasts over 130 MLS appearances and is expected to contribute significantly in the attacking midfield role.

Despite positive developments, challenges remain. Designated Player David Da Costa is recovering from shoulder surgery and will miss the start of the season. The club is also on the lookout for additional players to enhance their roster ahead of a demanding schedule leading into the World Cup break.

The Timbers aim to leverage their offensive strength, with Velde at the forefront and players like Felipe Mora expected to showcase their versatility. The arrival of Australian Alex Bonetig and New England’s Brandon Bye has strengthened the defense, which has seen robust depth.

As the season opener approaches, Neville maintains a hopeful outlook, insisting that the club is ready to step up and align with the momentum of the city’s progress. “This is my third year, and you know, I’m not embarrassed to say, I think this is a year when we’ve got to deliver,” he stated with enthusiasm. Excitement fills the air as the Timbers gear up for what they hope will be a successful season.
