The inaugural Great Lakes Championship, an event on the Epson Tour, is set to take place from June 13 to 15 at The Highlands’ Heather Course in Harbor Springs, Michigan. This tournament boasts a lucrative $250,000 purse, with the champion receiving $37,500.
A competitive field of 144 golfers, including top players from the Epson Tour and talented Michigan natives, will vie for qualification to the prestigious LPGA Tour. The atmosphere in Northern Michigan during the summer months enhances the excitement surrounding this event.
“We are thrilled that the Great Lakes Sports Commission and the Epson Tour have chosen The Highlands to host this championship,” said Josh Richter, Boyne Resorts SVP of golf. The Heather Course has a storied history, being the first BOYNE Golf course and pivotal in establishing northern Michigan as a summer golfing hub.
This weekend’s tournament will feature continuous play from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, culminating in a 5 p.m. awards ceremony. The event is open to the public for free, with VIP ticket options available.
The Great Lakes Championship is one of three Epson Tour events occurring in Michigan this season, which also includes the FireKeepers Casino Hotel Championship and the Island Resort Championship. Together, they form the new Pure Michigan Cup, with the top performer across these events receiving additional prize money.
The tournament highlights top performers such as current points leader Gina Kim and several others ranked within the top five on the tour. Additionally, Michigan golfers like BOYNE Golf ambassador Sarah White will be competing, showcasing local talent on a national stage.
This event not only underscores the competitive spirit of women’s golf but also stimulates economic growth and tourism in the region. It promises to enhance northern Michigan’s reputation as a premier golf destination, offering a thrilling experience for fans and participants alike.
