Great Ethiopian Run Turns 25 as Africa’s Largest 10K Earns World Athletics Heritage Status

Addis Ababa, November 23, 2025 (ENA) – The Great Ethiopian Run proudly celebrated its 25th anniversary today, drawing an impressive crowd of over 55,000 participants to Meskel Square for Africa’s largest 10-kilometer road race.

Since its inception in 2001 by renowned athletics champion Haile Gebrselassie, the annual event has evolved into a significant emblem of national pride and a global platform showcasing Ethiopia’s rich legacy in long-distance running.

This year’s edition, dubbed the Sofi Malt Great Ethiopian Run 2025, saw elite athletes, recreational runners, and international participants come together under the poignant theme “A Nation in 10 KM.” The event was attended by Addis Ababa Mayor Adanech Abiebie, Tourism Minister Selamawit Kassa, along with other dignitaries, marking this significant milestone.

The recently upgraded streets of the capital city transformed into a vibrant celebration, filled with music, cultural performances, and enthusiastic crowds cheering on the runners along the route. Organizers highlighted the race’s importance beyond just athletics, emphasizing its function in promoting Ethiopian culture, fostering unity, and enhancing community spirit.

Over its quarter-century history, the Great Ethiopian Run has attracted hundreds of thousands of runners, generating substantial funds for various social initiatives and programs aimed at youth development. Additionally, it has positively impacted Addis Ababa’s local economy, boosting tourism and business activities during the race weekend.

This year, the event gained extra accolades, achieving World Athletics Heritage status, which solidifies its cultural and historical significance in the global running community. As participants crossed the finish line, the air was filled with cheers, symbolizing the spirit of joy, resilience, and togetherness that have defined the Great Ethiopian Run since its beginning.
