Great America Amusement Park’s Future in Jeopardy: Visit Before It’s Too Late!

Thrill-seekers looking to enjoy the iconic Great America amusement park in Santa Clara should consider planning their visit soon, as its future appears uncertain following the sale of the land under the park to real estate giant Prologis. Purchased for $310 million three years ago, the company initially stated that Great America would remain open until at least 2028, with a potential extension until 2033. However, recent reports suggest that the park could close as early as 2027.

The situation has become more concerning with reports of significant layoffs at Six Flags Entertainment, which operates Great America, including over 100 layoffs primarily affecting office staff. The San Francisco Chronicle indicated that, based on comments from Six Flags’ CFO Brian Witherow during an Investor Day, if the lease is not extended, the park would cease operations following the 2027 season. This means that the park could shut down shortly after Halloween 2027, considerably sooner than previously anticipated.

Despite the looming closure, the park remains lively for this season, with special events such as Star-Spangled Nights on July 4 and 5, a Labor Day Celebration at the end of August, and other attractions in the coming months. These events could see increased attendance due to the cancellation of neighboring San Jose’s official July 4 fireworks, providing a chance for families to make lasting memories.

While the timeline for Great America’s closure is still tentative, the community’s spirit and the park’s upcoming events offer a bright spot for fans eager to experience its rides and attractions one last time.
