KNOXVILLE, Iowa — The FVP “Hard Knox” Night at the 64th NOS Energy Drink Knoxville Nationals Presented by Casey’s unfolded as an exhilarating event, with David Gravel claiming his 14th victory at the Knoxville Raceway, securing a coveted spot in Saturday’s championship race.
Gravel, driving for Big Game Motorsports No. 2, will have company in the finale from Buddy Kofoid, Cole Macedo, and Daryn Pittman, who will start from positions 21 through 24 respectively in the $195,000-to-win competition.
The race began with a hiccup as Anthony Macri stalled before a lap could be completed, leading to an early caution. Despite the early challenges, Kerry Madsen initially took the lead, pursued closely by Ashton Torgerson, Pittman, Chase Dietz, and Gravel, who quickly surged from fifth to third position.
The action intensified after a tire blowout by Kelby Watt brought another caution. Once racing resumed, Gravel began his climb as he snatched the lead from Madsen on lap 13, showcasing his skill and strategy. Kofoid’s impressive performance also stood out, as he advanced from 19th to sixth place during the race.
As the laps ticked down, the tension heightened with multiple caution flags, including a scary crash involving Justin Whittall that necessitated his transport for observation. Nevertheless, the racing excitement continued as Gravel maintained his lead, ultimately finishing ahead of Kofoid and Macedo. Pittman secured the last transfer position for the championship race, battling hard against Donny Schatz.
Gravel expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance, reflecting on the night, “We felt good all night long… it was treacherous fast for a while,” acknowledging the support of his crew after their previous challenges this week.
Kofoid was equally upbeat, crediting a strong performance in the B main for improving his car’s setup, while Macedo acknowledged the hard work of his team in making significant adjustments, leading to his podium finish.
Pittman, acknowledging the struggle his team faced, was grateful for the opportunity to compete as he secured his place in the main event.
