GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — On October 19, Grand Rapids will host the 22nd annual Grand Rapids Marathon, featuring a dynamic lineup of events, including a marathon, half marathon, 10K, and 5K, with expectations of a historic turnout. Race director Don Kern anticipates participation numbers will reach nearly 4,900 athletes.
The marathon will kick off on Winter Avenue, near the David D. Hunting YMCA, and will take participants through the heart of downtown, loop around Millennium Park in Walker, and return to Winter Avenue for a celebratory finish outside the Richard M. DeVos Center at Grand Valley State University.
Kern encourages spectators to come watch the runners, emphasizing the inspirational atmosphere of the event. “If you have never even seen a marathon, come out and watch the people finishing. It is the most inspirational thing you’ve ever seen,” he stated.
New this year, a five-person relay will allow teams to tackle the full marathon course with segments ranging from 4 to 6.5 miles, catering to a variety of skill levels. Additionally, a special kids race is scheduled for October 18, where children who have completed 25 miles of outdoor activity will run their culminating 1.2 miles to the finish line. “The kids race is so energetic. It’s so fun to watch,” Kern added.
Registration fees are set at $155 for the marathon, $135 for the half marathon, and a more accessible $50 for the 5K or 10K events. The main marathon will begin at 8 a.m., with runners expected to finish between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
