The operators of Xcel Energy Center, which hosts the NHL’s Minnesota Wild and the PWHL’s Minnesota Frost, have announced a name change for the venue. Starting September 3, the 18,000-seat arena located in downtown Saint Paul will now be known as Grand Casino Arena.
The new naming rights are the result of a 14-year partnership between Minnesota Sports & Entertainment and the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe, who own the facility. Craig Leipold, majority owner and principal investor in Minnesota Sports & Entertainment, emphasized the importance of this partnership, noting that Grand Casino Arena will serve as a cornerstone for a vibrant entertainment district that aims to rejuvenate downtown Saint Paul.
The naming rights have previously been held by Xcel Energy since the arena opened in 2000. Ronda Weizenegger, CEO of Grand Casino, expressed that this change represents more than just a rebranding; it’s a milestone in the company’s vision for the future. She highlighted the significance of this partnership as a testament to the strength of tribal enterprises and their commitment to investing in Minnesota’s development.
