Minister for Public Works Ro Filipe Tuisawau has asserted that the government is prioritizing the needs of landowners as it undertakes infrastructure projects. The coalition government aims to ensure that fair compensation and community benefits are at the forefront of its initiatives.
Ongoing discussions are taking place with Viria landowners in Naitasiri, who previously requested $9 million, along with consistent water supply for five villages and road rehabilitation as part of the Viria Water Project. In addressing the landowners’ requests, Tuisawau has emphasized that new measures will be implemented to enhance water connections, roads, and community facilities, stating, “The government owes a lot to the province and we have to make more effort to address some of their concerns like infrastructure, for example, here in Colo-i-Suva.”
Before upgrades to water supply and roadwork can commence this financial year, Tuisawau stressed the necessity of establishing water royalty agreements. He acknowledged the significant contributions of the Naitasiri province, which has provided land for vital water and electricity projects, and reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring fair compensation that would uplift local living standards.
This approach aligns with the government’s broader strategy to improve essential services while fostering positive relationships with landowners.
