SACRAMENTO – Governor Gavin Newsom released a heartfelt statement today following the death of former President Jimmy Carter.

“Jennifer and I join the country and the world in mourning the passing of President Jimmy Carter, a tireless champion for human rights and democracy whose unparalleled life of service made the world a better place.

“President Carter was a man of rare character – whose beliefs ran true and ran deep, whose moral compass never wavered. He saw the common humanity in all of us, building bridges between people of different faiths and factions abroad while tending to those in need at home. Despite facing significant challenges, his vibrant energy and spirit remained unshakeable.

“For President Carter, service was more than just a career; it was a way of life. After his presidency, the Carters dedicated themselves to promoting global peace and health through the Carter Center, positively impacting countless lives through their humanitarian efforts over the last four decades.

“His honesty, compassion, moral integrity, and sense of duty established a benchmark for all of us to strive toward. President Carter’s lasting legacy serves as a reminder that we can find common ground despite our differences.

“Our thoughts are with the Carter family, their loved ones and friends, and everyone who is grieving this substantial loss.”

In tribute to former President Carter, flags at the State Capitol and Capitol Annex Swing Space will be flown at half-staff.
