Infrastructure Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau has raised urgent concerns over the inappropriate use of government vehicles, which continues to be a pressing issue within various ministries. Reports have surfaced indicating that these vehicles are frequently not used for official duties, prompting increased scrutiny and demands for responsible and accountable management of these public assets.
Minister Tuisawau highlighted the pivotal role of senior officials, such as permanent secretaries and department heads, in ensuring government vehicles are used appropriately. He acknowledged that while everyday operations might slip beyond top officials’ direct oversight, their role is crucial in upholding regulatory compliance regarding vehicle use.
With a substantial financial investment dedicated to these vehicles, the minister stressed the importance of maintaining them properly and ensuring they are operated by qualified individuals. He reiterated the need for valid driver permits and adherence to a maintenance schedule, highlighting how misuse drains public resources.
Previously, Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad had proposed a new vehicle management system and established a fleet management unit under the Finance Ministry. These initiatives aim to enhance compliance and tackle misuse, fitting into broader efforts to improve governance and resource management.
The government has frequently encouraged public involvement by urging citizens to report instances of vehicle misuse. This strategy reflects a commitment to a community-centric approach in managing public resources, enhancing safety, and ensuring transparency. By promoting accountability and encouraging public participation, the government aspires to restore trust and optimize the use of public assets.
In conjunction with past initiatives, stricter guidelines have been repeatedly introduced to enforce the exclusive official use of government vehicles, with specific authorizations needed for any deviations. These persistent efforts aim to prevent misuse while fostering a transparent, efficient, and responsible governance framework that effectively serves the public interest.
