Students and teachers at Gospel High School recently marked the end of their academic term with a vibrant gospel concert that celebrated a significant chapter in Fiji’s history. Drawing inspiration from a powerful historical event, the concert featured a ten-member cast that reenacted the moment a village chief decided to end the ancient practice of sacrificing female virgins to the gods of war after a victorious battle.
Such sacrificial rituals were common during the early missionary period in Fiji, where they were believed to show gratitude to deities for military successes and to seek favor for future endeavors. The performance opened with a dramatic portrayal of the sacrifices, compelling the villagers to witness the ritual as a village caller demanded their attention.
In a crucial scene, the wives of Christian missionaries, who were in the village to spread their message, boldly intervened by entering the temple where the grim scene was taking place. They discovered two virgins who had already suffered strangulation, with three more at risk of the same fate. The missionaries denounced the practice as “evil,” sharing biblical teachings that resonated with the villagers. This powerful confrontation prompted the village chief to abolish the inhumane custom within his community.
Arthur Craine, the principal of Gospel High School, expressed pride in the students’ performances and commended the teachers for orchestrating such a meaningful event. He emphasized the concert’s theme, “Gospel Sounds the Trumpet,” and mentioned the possibility of even grander performances in the following year, inspired by the positive turnout. The proceeds from the concert were designated to support the school’s student council, highlighting the dual purpose of the event as both a celebration of talent and a means to foster student initiatives.
