The Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold has been unveiled at the Made By Google event, showcasing significant improvements over its predecessor. This new foldable phone features a bigger, lighter design and speeds up performance, while also receiving a deeper integration of Google’s AI, Gemini. One of the highlights is the promise of seven years of software updates, enhancing its longevity.
However, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold does come with some downsides, including a smaller battery compared to its predecessor, an inferior camera to the standard Pixel 9 Pro XL, and a high price point of $1,799. Additionally, Samsung continues to maintain an edge in refinement and reliability.
The Pixel 9 Pro Fold has noticeable upgrades in its design and specifications. Its release is set for September 4, and it features an 8-inch inner display and a 6.3-inch outer display with a resolution of 2152 x 2076 and 2424 x 1080, respectively. The device is powered by Google’s new Tensor G4 processor, has 16GB of RAM, and comes with storage options of 256GB or 512GB. Its battery capacity is 4,650 mAh, with support for 45W wired charging and 15W wireless charging.
The design has been updated for better handling; it uses aluminum with a satin finish and Gorilla Glass Victus 2 for durability. Notably, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold now has an IPX8 rating for water resistance, although it lacks dust protection.
Enhancements in display capabilities make it more user-friendly when closed. The new model features thinner bezels, positioning the selfie camera in the corner, unlike previous models. Additionally, the screen brightness has increased dramatically to 2,700 nits, optimizing outdoor visibility.
Camera-wise, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold upgrades include a 10.8MP telephoto camera and a 10.5MP ultra-wide lens, enhancing photography options alongside the existing 48MP main camera.
The software experience is bolstered by Gemini, which offers AI capabilities to assist with everyday tasks and responses. Exclusive features for the new Pixel include Pixel Screenshots for finding relevant screen captures and Pixel Studio for image generation. New camera features also enable unique photography styling, although their use of AI may not appeal to everyone.
Equipped with Android 14, the device offers multitasking features such as a floating taskbar, split-screen capability, and a new multi-view mode for visual content.
Pre-orders for the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold are currently available, with shipping and broader availability scheduled to commence on September 4.
