Golf’s Dilemma: Stars Miss 2025 PGA Championship in Surprising Shift

Several prominent golfers are notably absent from the 2025 PGA Championship, leading to a mix of surprise and interest among fans. John Daly is among those who have opted to compete in the Regions Tradition, a major event on the 50-and-over PGA Tour Champions circuit, rather than participate in the PGA Championship held at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, N.C. This year marks a pivotal shift as the Regions Tradition has been scheduled at the same time as the PGA Championship, a scenario that has intensified since the PGA’s May date change in 2019.

Daly explained his decision, expressing excitement for playing in Birmingham despite recognizing the PGA’s allure, particularly in terms of potential earnings. Alongside Daly, other notable veterans like Y.E. Yang, Davis Love III, and Vijay Singh opted for the Regions Tradition as well. This change in scheduling also saw six golfers aged 50 and over still participating in the PGA, with Padraig Harrington being the only one who regularly competes on the Champions circuit.

The absence of other surprising names adds to the anticipation surrounding the PGA Championship. For instance, Billy Horschel, ranked No. 24, is out due to hip surgery, while Shaun Norris, despite being the highest-ranked player not in the field at No. 101, declined his invitation to prioritize his mother’s health. Luke Clanton, ranked No. 106, is also absent, as he remains an amateur, while the legendary Tiger Woods misses the tournament due to recovery from Achilles tendon surgery.

These unexpected withdrawals highlight the challenges faced by professional golfers as they navigate personal health issues and family priorities alongside their commitment to the sport. As the PGA Championship unfolds, fans will surely feel the absence of these remarkable players while also celebrating the talent that is competing. The event promises to be exciting nonetheless, showcasing both established champions and emerging stars within the golfing world.
