GOLF Fiji has concluded what it labels as one of its most successful seasons, marked by international progress, a significant increase in junior participants, and enhanced support for local clubs. President Amitesh Chandra highlighted that the year 2025 featured several notable accomplishments, including the hosting of six world ranking events, the highest number ever organized in a single year.
A standout achievement was the remarkable rise of 21-year-old Raina Kumar, who became the first female golfer from Fiji to attain a world ranking. Additionally, fellow national representative Shakeel Pillay demonstrated impressive progress, improving his position from approximately 4,000th in January to nearing the 1,000 mark this week.
Chandra expressed pride in the performance of Golf Fiji, stating, “This year has been a very successful one for Golf Fiji. Our elite squad development has been strong, and we now have over 50 active junior players across the country.” The increase in junior participation is largely attributed to support from Novotel, alongside mentoring from one of Fiji’s PGA professionals who has played a vital role in executing development programs.
In efforts to bolster local clubs, Golf Fiji allocated around $20,000 to affiliated clubs, including Ba, Nadi, Pacific Harbour, Novotel, Lautoka, and Denarau, aimed at promoting development at all levels. A similar funding initiative is planned for 2026. However, Chandra acknowledged the ongoing challenge of securing sponsorships, noting that golf remains a minority sport in Fiji. He explained, “Many stakeholders still don’t understand how the game is played. While we do have some sponsors, most are golfers themselves, and if company leadership doesn’t play golf, they are often hesitant to offer support.”
Looking ahead, Golf Fiji is set to kick off its 2026 schedule with a national junior event at Novotel on January 10, followed by the Fiji Amateur Championship in March. The highlight of the season, the Fiji Open, is again scheduled to take place during the Fiji Day weekend at Fiji Golf Club. Reflecting on the past year, Chandra emphasized that while Golf Fiji can create programs and opportunities, ultimately, participation relies on individual commitment and enthusiasm. This positive outlook for the future suggests a vibrant trajectory for the sport in Fiji.
