A GoFundMe campaign created to support the family of Renee Nicole Good, a Minneapolis woman tragically shot by an ICE agent on January 7, has closed after raising over $1.5 million. The campaign, which launched just hours after the incident, attracted more than 38,500 contributions, totaling $1,503,533.
The funds will be placed in a trust for Good’s family, with organizers expressing their gratitude to contributors in an update on the GoFundMe page. They encouraged donations to other causes in need, acknowledging the outpouring of support from the community. They stated, “We’re truly grateful.”
Renee Good, 37, a mother of three, was shot while inside her Honda Pilot SUV during an immigration enforcement operation near her home. In a statement to Minnesota Public Radio, Good’s wife, Rebecca, explained that the couple had stopped to support their neighbors when the altercation occurred, noting the contrast of their whistles against the guns of the officers involved.
The event has sparked nationwide protests opposing ICE, with more than 1,000 rallies planned for January 10 and 11, reflecting widespread unrest regarding the shooting. Despite the release of additional video from the ICE agent’s perspective, tensions have only escalated, with Vice President JD Vance asserting that the agent acted in self-defense, while critics like Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer argued that the shooting was unjustified.
Court records revealed the identified ICE agent as Jonathan Ross, a veteran of the U.S. Army and a former Border Patrol agent.
Rebecca Good emphasized her wife’s core values in her statement, highlighting Renee’s kindness. “This kindness of strangers is the most fitting tribute,” she said. “Renee leaves behind three extraordinary children; the youngest is just six years old and already lost his father.” She expressed her determination to teach their son that individuals are striving to create a better world despite the hate they encounter.
Multiple GoFundMe campaigns featuring Renee Good’s name are being reviewed by the fundraising platform’s Trust and Safety team, ensuring the integrity of these efforts.
This tragic incident not only highlights the complex issues surrounding immigration enforcement but also showcases the profound impact one individual’s life can have on a community, as evidenced by the tremendous support for the Good family in the wake of this heartbreaking loss.
