Godwin’s Injury: What’s Next for the Buccaneers?

Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Chris Godwin was carted off the field towards the end of Thursday’s matchup against the Baltimore Ravens. Following the game, head coach Todd Bowles reported that initial assessments suggest Godwin may have suffered a dislocated ankle, noting that the situation “doesn’t look good.”

Godwin was seen leaving the field with an air cast on his left leg. Prior to his injury, he made seven receptions for 65 yards, taking on a larger role as teammate Mike Evans dealt with a hamstring injury sustained earlier in the game.

Entering the week, Godwin had recorded 43 catches for 511 yards and five touchdowns. In the 2023 season, he participated in all 17 games, leading the Buccaneers with 83 receptions and ranking second in receiving yards with 1,024. He scored two touchdowns and contributed a rushing touchdown, marking his third consecutive season with over 1,000 yards and the fourth of his career.

The 28-year-old previously faced a significant injury in late 2021, tearing his ACL and MCL, yet he returned for Week 1 of the 2022 season. He continued to be a vital player for Tampa Bay, playing in 15 games, achieving a career-high 104 catches, 1,023 yards, and three touchdowns.

Godwin had been a primary target for former Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady, who retired after the 2022 season. He also developed a strong connection with Baker Mayfield, who was named the starting quarterback last offseason and received a three-year contract extension in March.
