Gobert Seals $110 Million Deal: What Does This Mean for the Timberwolves?

Rudy Gobert, the center for the Minnesota Timberwolves, has finalized a three-year contract extension worth $110 million, as reported on Tuesday night. The new agreement was reached between the Timberwolves and Gobert’s agent, Bouna Ndiaye of Comsport, just prior to the season opener against the Los Angeles Lakers, ensuring that the four-time Defensive Player of the Year remains with the team.

By declining his player option worth $46.6 million for the 2025-26 season, Gobert secured a new multiyear deal. This move is expected to offer the Timberwolves significant flexibility as they manage their increasing salary cap expenses. Throughout the negotiation process, Gobert voiced his confidence in the Timberwolves’ strategy for contention and the potential for financial security while allowing the team to enhance its roster.

Included in Gobert’s new deal is a player option for the 2027-28 season and a trade kicker.

The 32-year-old Gobert was instrumental in the Timberwolves achieving a 56-26 record last season and advancing to the Western Conference finals, marking only the second time in the franchise’s history they progressed beyond the first round of the playoffs. He averaged 14.0 points, 12.9 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks, earning his fourth Defensive Player of the Year title.

This continued Gobert’s impressive streak, making it eight consecutive seasons where he averaged a double-double. Before joining the Timberwolves in a blockbuster trade in the 2022 offseason, Gobert spent nine seasons with the Utah Jazz, during which the Timberwolves traded away a significant package that included four first-round picks.
