The 2025 Fiji Cup commenced with great enthusiasm at Lawaqa Park yesterday, featuring a vibrant touch rugby tournament that attracted teams from across the globe. Tournament director Harley Wall expressed his excitement for the opening round of this year’s competition, noting the impressive preparation that teams exhibited.
Wall highlighted the increasing participation year on year, with 34 teams actively competing this time around. He remarked, “The teams that have come have prepared well for this tournament. We are excited to have some big teams in the world come for the Fiji Cup this year,” which includes participants from New Zealand, Australia, and an inaugural team from the USA.
Assistant Tournament Director Nanise Tikoicina shared her enthusiasm over the intense competition seen on the first day. The Open Men’s category saw dramatic encounters, with Wairere dominating their matches. In Section A, Wairere secured victories, including an overwhelming 12-1 win against AZ1, showcasing their strength in the tournament. Section B also featured thrilling games, with teams like Elementz and Bolts displaying notable performances.
As the tournament progresses, the anticipation for today’s finals grows, promising an exciting end to the touch rugby segment. The growing popularity of touch rugby not only highlights local talent but also positions Fiji as a central hub for this sport on the global stage.
