Global Handwashing Day Ignites Fiji’s Push for Hygiene Ahead of Cyclone Season

During Global Handwashing Day celebrations held on Thursday, Gopal Jadhav, the Chief Marketing Manager of Punjas Group, emphasized the crucial role of handwashing in preventing diseases such as diarrhoea, influenza, typhoid, and respiratory infections. This health insight is particularly pertinent during cyclone season, a time when diseases can spread rapidly due to unsanitary conditions.

Mr. Jadhav highlighted that handwashing is one of the simplest yet most effective ways to protect public health. He stated, “For years, we’ve been manufacturing hygiene products for Fijian homes from laundry and dishwashing soaps to our Bodyguard and MedX Antibacterial Cleansing Bars.” These products not only clean but also actively eliminate germs, aiding in the prevention of infections. In light of health challenges like COVID-19, the company continues to innovate its product offerings to ensure the safety of families, schools, and workplaces.

Health Inspector Rakesh Kumar, who played a pivotal role in promoting hygiene awareness within schools and communities, lauded these efforts. He noted that the Western Division is currently free from typhoid but stressed that maintaining cleanliness is a communal responsibility. “We must work together,” he asserted, raising concerns about the consequences of neglecting hygiene during outbreaks of preventable diseases like typhoid, leptospirosis, and dengue.

Visual demonstrations of proper handwashing techniques were conducted at the event, which took place at the Girmit Centre in Lautoka. Health Inspector Lautoka Yasawa Makenesi Cavakilagi engaged school students directly, reinforcing the importance of hand hygiene among the youth.

This initiative, which coincides with a larger tradition of community engagement around Global Handwashing Day, reminds all Fijians that even small daily habits such as proper handwashing can lead to significant health benefits. As Fiji navigates through public health challenges, the collaboration between the Punjas Group and the Ministry of Health serves as a hopeful example of how public and private sectors can work together to uplift community health practices. Together, they are fostering a culture of hygiene awareness and preventive care, aimed at ensuring a healthier future for the next generation.
