The Pacific Islands News Association (PINA) is excited to take part in the global observance of International Women’s Day 2026, focusing on the vital contributions of women in media across the Pacific. This year’s theme, “Give to Gain,” underscores the principle that when women are afforded respect, equal opportunities, and protection, journalism and media organizations flourish.
Women journalists in the Pacific play an essential role in conveying important stories. While progress in representation has been made, many women in media continue to face significant challenges. More than half of these journalists report experiencing various forms of workplace abuse or harassment, including online abuse and sexual harassment. Inequities such as unfair pay and limited opportunities in areas such as sports and political reporting persist, despite the journalists’ qualifications.
Nevertheless, women journalists remain steadfast in their mission, particularly in covering issues like gender-based violence and other community challenges. PINA acknowledges the important work of Pacific-led initiatives such as Women in Media Fiji and networks in Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, and Tonga, which aim to foster safe environments, mentorship, and professional support for female media professionals.
Since 2022, the promotion of women in media has been a key agenda item for PINA, with discussions held at several Pacific Media Summits, including those in the Solomon Islands and Niue in 2024. This critical issue will continue to be emphasized at the upcoming 8th Pacific Media Summit set for September 2026 in Savusavu, Fiji.
PINA President Kalafi Moala has stressed the fundamental role of women in shaping the future of journalism in the Pacific. He remarked, “When we give women equal space, respect, and protection in our newsrooms, we gain stronger storytelling, stronger institutions, and stronger communities. Supporting women in media is not optional — it is essential for the future of our region.”
As International Women’s Day approaches, PINA calls upon media employers and male colleagues throughout the Pacific to treat women with the respect and fairness they deserve, and to cultivate safe and supportive work environments for all journalists. Empowering women in media not only benefits the individuals involved but also contributes to the overall advancement of the entire Pacific region.
PINA wishes all women media workers in the Pacific a joyful International Women’s Day, recognizing the dedication and resilience they demonstrate in the field.
