Texas State Representative Gina Hinojosa has announced her candidacy for governor, marking a significant move in the race for the state’s highest office. Hinojosa, a Democrat known for her advocacy of public school policies, shared her intentions in a campaign launch video and unveiled her campaign website shortly before the announcement.

In her video, Hinojosa paid tribute to her grandmother, emphasizing a philosophy of resilience and determination with the phrase “No Te Dejes” – a call to “not give up.” She expressed her concerns about the current state of Texas under Governor Greg Abbott, criticizing his administration for prioritizing billionaire interests while average Texans are left struggling with rising costs of living, healthcare, and housing.

Hinojosa specifically called out Abbott’s support for what she referred to as the “private school voucher scam,” which she believes undermines public education. She attributed the soaring prices in Texas to the influence of wealthy corporations and individuals, notably referencing Abbott’s substantial campaign contributions from megadonors like Jeff Yass, a prominent advocate for school vouchers.

Having grown up in Brownsville and navigating her own educational journey through public schools, Hinojosa has a personal stake in the issues she champions. She began her political career by serving on the Austin Independent School District board, where she fought to keep schools open and accessible to all students. Since being elected to the Texas House in 2017, she has continued to advocate for education and equitable healthcare access.

If victorious in her bid, Hinojosa would make history as the first Democratic governor in Texas in three decades, potentially signaling a shift in the political landscape of the state. She is set to formally kick off her campaign with a rally in Brownsville, further solidifying her commitment to reshaping Texas governance to focus on the needs of its residents.
