Mel Gibson’s long-awaited sequel to “The Passion of the Christ,” titled “The Resurrection of the Christ,” is gearing up to start filming in Rome, but it will feature an entirely new cast, indicating a significant shift from the original film. According to sources, Jim Caviezel, who portrayed Jesus in the 2004 blockbuster, and Monica Bellucci, who played Mary Magdalene, will not reprise their roles.
As the production moves forward, casting sessions are currently taking place in Rome. Insiders have suggested that the decision to cast new actors was motivated by the logistical challenges associated with reuniting the original cast, which would have required extensive digital work and coordination around their schedules.
Gibson’s sequel has faced numerous delays over the years, largely due to the controversies surrounding the director. After a series of public scandals, including a DUI and offensive remarks, he faced a backlash that momentarily sidelined his Hollywood career. Nevertheless, Gibson, now sober, demonstrated his filmmaking capabilities with the critically acclaimed “Hacksaw Ridge,” which earned him an Oscar nomination in 2016.
The anticipated follow-up to the groundbreaking indie film will reportedly be released in two parts, both of which are expected to hit theaters in 2027. The original “The Passion of the Christ” made an impressive $610 million worldwide against a modest budget of $30 million, solidifying its place in cinematic history.
With this new direction, Gibson aims to capture a fresh audience while revisiting one of his most impactful works. As production approaches, many fans are eager to see how the story unfolds and what new interpretations will emerge in this sequel.
