Mel Gibson’s highly anticipated two-part film, The Resurrection of the Christ, is projected to emerge as the largest-budget endeavor at next month’s American Film Market (AFM), with each installment reportedly carrying a budget close to $100 million. This combined $200 million budget is a rarity within the independent film sector, marking it as a standout project.

Currently in production in Rome, Italy, The Resurrection of the Christ is slated for release in 2027, with the first part premiering on Good Friday, March 26, and the second part following on Ascension Day, 40 days later. However, the details surrounding the film’s scripts remain closely guarded, a departure from typical independent film practices. It is still uncertain whether buyers will have access to the scripts during AFM, which could necessitate a leap of faith in Gibson’s vision.

The narrative will pick up following the crucifixion of Christ, which concluded the first film. The storyline is expected to delve into themes surrounding Christ’s resurrection, incorporating imaginative elements described by Gibson as “an acid trip.” The film is set to feature battles between angels and demons, exploring forces of good and evil in other realms. Due to its ambitious scope, Gibson has indicated that the dialogue will likely be in English, as opposed to the original Aramaic and Hebrew, to enhance audience engagement.

Some potential buyers have expressed disappointment over the absence of original cast members Jim Caviezel and Monica Bellucci. Caviezel, who starred in the 2004 film, has been replaced by relative newcomer Jaakko Ohtonen in the role of Jesus. Meanwhile, Mariela Garriga and Kasia Smutniak will portray Mary Magdalene and Mary, respectively, with additional roles featuring Italian actors Pier Luigi Pasino as Peter and Riccardo Scamarcio as Pontius Pilate.

Despite concerns regarding the asking prices and the potential for controversy surrounding the film’s themes, industry insiders remain optimistic. One buyer noted, “This one sells itself. It’s gold in terms of material. Look how well the first one did.” Gibson’s past work as a director, which includes hits like Hacksaw Ridge and Apocalypto, has established him as a formidable figure, lending confidence to the project.

The original film, The Passion of the Christ, achieved remarkable box office success, grossing over $610 million worldwide despite its $30 million budget, earning it the title of the highest-grossing R-rated film in the U.S. for two decades. However, it too encountered significant controversy, with criticisms centered on anti-Semitic themes and graphic violence. Given the current political climate and Gibson’s history, The Resurrection of the Christ is likely to ignite similarly heated debates upon its release.

Gibson has collaborated with Randall Wallace, known for his work on Braveheart, to co-write this ambitious sequel, with Icon Productions and Lionsgate handling its distribution. Both Gibson and Lionsgate have chosen not to comment further on the project, leaving much to speculation and intrigue as AFM approaches.
