The New York Giants are set to face off against the Houston Texans in what is expected to be their most authentic preseason game of the summer. Daniel Jones will take the field at NRG Stadium for the first time since his ACL injury nine months ago, with nearly all of his offensive line and key receivers, including Malik Nabers, Wan’Dale Robinson, Jalin Hyatt, and Darius Slayton, ready to play.
Nabers, who had previously been sidelined with an ankle injury, is also anticipated to join the game. On defense, fans will finally see the Giants’ front featuring Dexter Lawrence, Brian Burns, and Kayvon Thibodeaux, who were not included in the preseason opener against the Lions. The first-team defense is expected to play at least a quarter, challenging C.J. Stroud and the Texans’ dynamic passing game, which includes new talent like Stefon Diggs, Tank Dell, and Nico Collins. The Giants’ revamped secondary, featuring Tae Banks and Nick McCloud at cornerback, will face significant tests.
Offensively, left guard Jon Runyan is likely the only starter who will not be available, but he is close to returning.
In the first half, Daniel Jones demonstrated some struggles, including one particularly poor decision that led to a turnover. Despite completing 11 of 18 passes for 138 yards, his performance drew criticism, especially after he threw a Pick-6 interception to Houston’s Jalen Pitre.
There are concerns regarding the “unsettled” state of the Giants’ offensive line. However, this label may not be entirely justified, as the team had been preparing for a reshuffle since Evan Neal went on the PUP list before training camp. With Jermaine Eluemunor already established at right tackle last season and adjustments made for veteran Greg Van Roten to step in, the Giants have been working on their line cohesion throughout the summer.
As the preseason continues, the offensive line’s performance will be closely scrutinized to assess their progression. The Giants aim to solidify their starting lineup for the upcoming season, likely featuring Andrew Thomas, Jon Runyan, John Michael Schmitz, Greg Van Roten, and Eluemunor, with Stinnie as a top reserve.
The Giants will take on the Texans on Saturday, August 17, at 1 p.m. at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas.
