The San Francisco Giants are facing challenges in their starting rotation following a difficult outing by pitcher Jordan Hicks, who lasted just over two innings in an 8-7 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks. Hicks allowed five runs on seven hits, raising his ERA to 6.55 for the season. This performance has sparked speculation about his future in the rotation, especially as he has not secured a win in his past eight starts, posting a disappointing 7.55 ERA.
Manager Bob Melvin did not make any immediate decisions regarding Hicks’s position after the game, emphasizing that Hicks’s pitching skill appeared solid despite the poor results. Melvin noted Hicks’s ability to generate hard ground balls, which unfortunately weren’t always fielded effectively. “At some point in time, you’d think they’d be hit at somebody,” he remarked, reflecting on the unfortunate circumstances leading to Hicks’ struggles.
Hicks’s early career success followed his transition from the bullpen to starting, where he initially thrived in 2024, recording a 2.33 ERA after his first 11 starts. However, he later experienced difficulties managing innings, causing a decline in performance mid-season. To prepare for this year, Hicks added approximately 15 pounds of muscle to enhance his stamina, with hopes of improving consistency on the mound.
The Giants are also considering other options, including young pitchers Kyle Harrison and Hayden Birdsong, who could step in if needed. Birdsong had a rough outing but has performed well overall in relief, showcasing a 2.31 ERA in 11 appearances.
Despite the setbacks, Hicks recognizes the importance of adjusting and moving forward. “At the end of the day, I’m just going to go out there every time and put my best foot forward,” he said, focusing on learning from each outing while striving for improvement.
While the situation is challenging, the Giants’ commitment to evaluate and adapt could lead to a positive turnaround. Each pitcher has the opportunity to grow and develop through adversities, which may ultimately strengthen the team’s rotation as the season progresses.
