The NFL trade deadline has now passed, revealing that only one notable quarterback move was made: Joe Flacco’s transfer to the Cincinnati Bengals. Consequently, Jameis Winston remains with the New York Giants as their third-string quarterback for the remainder of the season.
Winston, who was signed as a free agent, has been serving as the emergency No. 3 quarterback throughout the 2025 campaign. His situation was unchanged even as Jaxson Dart assumed starting duties from Russell Wilson. Despite speculation that either Wilson or Winston might be traded after Dart took over, both quarterbacks have stayed in New York, with Winston’s contract extending through 2026. This indicates that he will continue to be part of the team’s plans beyond this season.
Leading up to the trade deadline, reports from ESPN’s Jordan Raanan divulged that the Giants did not receive any inquiries regarding Winston. Although both of the veteran quarterbacks attracted the attention of the Bengals prior to their deal for Flacco, there were no strong connections established for Winston elsewhere. Furthermore, it appears that the Giants weren’t inclined to entertain any trade proposals for him either.
Winston expressed his commitment to the team during an interview, stating, “When a team gives me the opportunity and believes in me, they give me a job, I want to play for that team and do my best for that team. I’m a solutions-oriented guy, so I want to be a part of the solution. I don’t just want to run away when things get bad.”
As the season progresses, it is noteworthy that Wilson held starting responsibilities at the season’s outset but may not return to the Giants next spring, especially following the team’s decision to pivot to Dart. Should Wilson leave, Winston, aged 31, is positioned to take on the backup quarterback role in 2026. His contract, which spans two years for $8 million, includes guaranteed salary for the upcoming season.
Dart’s development will be an essential focus for the Giants as they evaluate their leadership, particularly concerning head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen. As the team plans for the future, regardless of the coaching staff’s fate heading into the 2026 season, Winston will serve as a reliable veteran presence at quarterback.
