The San Francisco Giants have announced the dismissal of Farhan Zaidi from his role as president of baseball operations, replacing him with franchise icon Buster Posey. This decision was made public on Monday.

Zaidi joined the Giants on November 6, 2018, but through his six-year tenure, the team only achieved a winning record once. That lone successful season was in 2021, when they recorded a franchise-best 107 wins. Otherwise, the Giants’ performance was lackluster, finishing with win totals of 81, 79, and 80 in the following three seasons. His tenure included just one postseason appearance, which ended in a narrow 3-2 loss to the Dodgers in the NLDS.

While Zaidi’s record raised concerns about his future with the organization, it was also noted that significant moves, like the extension of All-Star third baseman Matt Chapman, were reportedly handled by Posey rather than Zaidi. Consequently, the Giants have made the transition to Posey in the leadership role.

The Giants released a statement regarding the decision to part ways with Zaidi, expressing gratitude for his dedication and acknowledging that the outcomes did not meet expectations. They emphasized the need for new leadership to enhance the team’s ability to compete for championships consistently. The statement also expressed confidence in Posey’s capability to define and lead the franchise’s baseball philosophy, citing his intelligence and determination.

Buster Posey, 37, played his entire 12-year MLB career with the Giants after being selected fifth overall in the 2008 draft. He earned Rookie of the Year honors, won the MVP award in 2012, captured three World Series titles, and was named an All-Star seven times.

Posey concluded his playing career after the 2021 season, retiring with a strong season that included being named an All-Star and posting a batting average of .304 with a 140 OPS+ at the age of 34.

In September 2022, Posey became part of the Giants’ ownership group and began serving on the board of directors, gradually increasing his influence within the organization. He is now in the position of top decision-maker for the team.
