Giants Land Adames: A Record-Setting Deal That Changes Everything

Willy Adames, the 29-year-old shortstop, has finalized a significant seven-year, $182 million contract with the San Francisco Giants, marking the largest financial commitment in the franchise’s history. This agreement was reported on Saturday and emphasizes the team’s ambition to strengthen their roster during the offseason.

Adames emerged as the Giants’ primary target for this winter, especially after the team’s hopes of signing top free agent Juan Soto faced uncertainty as he is expected to make a decision in the coming days. Adames, a notable player for the Milwaukee Brewers—where he spent the past four seasons after a trade from the Tampa Bay Rays—brings a proven ability to generate power from the shortstop position, a rarity in the league. His 30-homer capability is particularly valuable, especially following the retirement of long-time Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford.

The contract, pending a physical examination, surpasses the previous franchise record set by catcher Buster Posey’s $167 million deal, underscoring the confidence the Giants have in Adames and the direction of their team under Posey’s new role as president of baseball operations. The contract reportedly includes a $22 million signing bonus.

In the 2024 season, Adames showcased exceptional performance, achieving personal highs with 32 home runs, 112 RBIs, and 21 stolen bases, which positioned him fifth among shortstops in terms of wins above replacement, according to FanGraphs. He also made headlines by tying the major league record for the most three-run home runs in a single season with 13, significantly contributing to the Brewers’ National League Central championship run.

While other teams considered him for a position switch to third base, the Giants are optimistic about Adames’ defensive skills complementing his offensive output at shortstop. Over his seven-year career, he has registered a batting average of .248 with a .322 on-base percentage, belting 150 homers and driving in 472 runs, along with 51 stolen bases.

This new chapter for Adames with the Giants signals a hopeful future for the franchise, as they look to enhance their competitive edge and build a formidable lineup moving forward.
